A RECIPE FOR
RICH EXPERIENCE
Sometimes campuses have all the right ingredients – they just need to be used in new and creative ways. Sometimes adding bit of spice can make all the difference
The University of Delaware is a very special place. Founded in 1743, its historic campus buildings frame a linear quad, defining an enduring campus character. Over time, as the campus continued to grow, it’s form elongate to the north and to the south. Today, UD’s 24,000 students traverse the linear campus daily. The Student Experience Master Plan leverages these movement patterns, creating an intentional “Experiential Path”. Along the pathway, a series of strategic renovations add student engagement environments in
existing buildings. New student housing and other structures are sited to strengthen
the vitality of the path.
REIMAGINED EXISTING STRUCTURES:
The Trabant University Center, originally designed by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, is reimagined to create a vibrant inside-out social hub along the path. Outdoor spaces bring the vitality of neighboring Main Street into the campus. In other locations, such as the library, student engagement space is created as a node along the Experiential Path.
STRATEGICALLY LOCATED NEW STRUCTURES:
A replacement student center anchors a segment of the Experiential Path at the heart of a first-year residential neighborhood. Likewise, other newly constructed buildings are strategically located to extend social vibrancy throughout the campus.
A BIT OF SPICE:
Landscaping and open-air structures add
“a bit of spice” along the Experiential Path, creating places for impromptu social connection. Intentional outdoor environments illuminate the campus
with social vitality.
