Restoring the
Crown Jewel
As the oldest building on campus and the new home for the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), the University Hall renovation project provided a unique opportunity to recover the historic feel of this iconic building, while meeting the social and academic needs of modern students.
Through extensive focus groups and working sessions, the Workshop team helped to identify departmental synergies within CLA and helped strategize solutions for flexible space use, potential for shared resources, and impactful social space. The main gathering space at University Hall is a recovered 2 story volume with an open mezzanine above. The East facing windows allow generous natural light into the carefully detailed space; where rich wood tones, textured upholstery, and ornamental railings evoke the building’s history and echo its original use.
