Capturing the Outdoors

Campus priorities have centered on improving the student experience at UNC-Asheville. Highsmith Student Union. The first phase to be implemented is a uniquely situated multi-purpose connection between the Union and UNCA’s Brown Dining Hall. In bridging these facilities, there is a sense of completion and liveliness.

By connecting the student union and dining hall, not only are views over the adjacent landscape improved, but new program better activates the north quad side of the building.

Focusing on key areas of enhancement for the overall Master Plan, an extension of the plaza provides a ‘student life porch’ which will integrate the addition with the existing buildings. The quality of the ‘front porch’ brings opportunities for student life to be celebrated and visible to the larger campus community. Students are encouraged to customize this space and treat it as an outdoor living room for the renovated Highsmith Union.
