Milwaukee, WI – Nationally regarded planning, design and strategy firm Workshop Architects announced today the hiring of noted university leader Loren J. Rullman, PhD, as Principal and Director of Higher Education. He joins the firm after a distinguished 32-year career in university administration.

“This is a historic and important time for higher education,” said Jan van den Kieboom, AIA, NCARB, and founding Principal. “Our colleagues are leading through post-pandemic recovery, funding challenges, racial injustices, and enrollment shifts. Our firm continues to grow and adapt to provide even broader, more integrated, and deeply knowledgeable experience to colleges and universities. We believe Loren offers us and our clients a unique depth of experience with the cultural, organizational, political, and financial intricacies of higher education.”

Rullman most recently served as Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI; and prior to this served for a decade as Associate Vice President for Student Life at the University of Michigan and in similar roles at several other public and private institutions. His broad experience includes having led or supervised most student affairs functions and staff; responsibility for a $150 million self-generated auxiliary budget; and oversight of $1 billion in campus and facility planning, construction, and renovation. Rullman has presented at over 40 conferences, authored 12 publications, founded and taught in a higher education graduate program, and served on two higher education association boards of directors.

"I am passionate about uncovering aspirations, aligning strategies, and unlocking potential in people, places, and organizations,” said Rullman. “Over the years I have collaborated with Workshop on research, presentations, and facility projects, and been deeply impressed by the firm’s passion for student success, commitment to social justice, and ability to sensitively facilitiate solutions. I am thrilled to join this team.”
