Kirby Student Center
University of Minnesota DULUTH

Sometimes it is the smallest projects that make the biggest impact on a campus. Located at the heart of University of Minnesota Duluth, Kirby Student Center serves as a main north-south passageway, connecting students to buildings along a central corridor, a feature the architects hoped to enhance as an interactive experience through the space. With high-volume traffic passing through daily, there was an opportunity to program the space as a display of student learning and involvement, increasing visibility and creating a destination for activity that serves a variety of functions. The building sits atop a sloped site with the student center looking out over Lake Superior and the City of Duluth below. To reflect the students’ passion for the outdoors, the goal was to open up the space, creating a visual connection to the dramatic natural setting while providing a warm and inviting environment within.
