University of Wisconsin – Madison
The award-winning Union South has quickly become a national benchmark for union design excellence. A highly inclusive design process identified a series of “socially ergonomic criteria” that informed planning and design decisions. This process resulted in a new university union with an unusually diverse array of interior environments. The spatial variety, spanning from quaint two-person booths and intimate coffee-house style lounges to expansive outdoor terraces and an open, inviting sun garden, now attracts a highly diverse group of students, faculty, staff and community members.
Its success is realized on multiple levels, the greatest being the enthusiastic adoption of this space by the students, campus community, and vast audience of alum, prospective students, fans, friends and family of the UW network. The fact that it seems to speak fluent Madison, is directly attributable to the deep involvement of a wide cross-section of campus community members in its creation.
