Norris University Center Master Plan
Northwestern University

While Northwestern University’s Norris University Center has served as the nexus of student and community life since 1972, programmatic needs and site constraints have limited the building’s ability to fulfill its mission. Workshop explored opportunities to strengthen the connection between Norris’ beautiful lakeshore location and the rest of campus, changing the common perception that Norris is remote and difficult to access. Through a robust, interactive process with campus stakeholders, Workshop identified an opportunity to integrate Career Services into an open space under the south tower of the library to the west. The intervention formally and functionally links historically segregated academic and student life units while improving access to the Norris Center and making it feel more integral to the rest of the campus. Workshop Architects also worked with Brailsford & Dunlavey to define programmatic needs, including several elements dedicated to academic excellence, support, and engagement.
