Workshop Architects partnered with students, staff and the campus community to develop a plan to guide the future of the Memorial Union Building – affectionately called the MUB. The master planning process began with an in-depth analysis of the overall campus to determine if the location of the Memorial Union should be reconsidered. After evaluating many alternatives a vision emerged that unites the gathering spaces of the Library with the gathering spaces of the Union to create a campus crossroads – enhancing student interaction and sociability.
Houghton, MI is subjected to long, cold gray winters. Due to the cold climate, students voiced a strong desire to have a sunny gathering place with a large fireplace – a place to see and be seen.
